We live in an increasingly inter-connected and globalized world. Having an intercultural experience is necessary for success in the workplace. Studying abroad can help students achieve their academic, personal, and professional goals. It is more than just a vacation; it is a life changing experience. Very few people regret making the decision to study abroad, but many people who did not study abroad regret it later in life. Simply put, it is an experience that you can only have while in college. 

 
If you plan ahead of time, you can take courses in your major or minor while abroad, or take free electives. You can also do an internship abroad with your academic department's approval. All the grades you earn abroad will be put towards your degree at Salem State, as long as you get approval from the department chairperson.

Studying abroad is a unique opportunity to live in another country, rather than simply be a tourist and observing the local culture. Being a student in another country gives you the opportunity to experience the local culture, traditions, and society from the inside.
Everyone can enhance their language skills while studying abroad, whether you're a beginner or fluent. Being in a country where the language is spoken helps you become more confident in your language speaking abilities, and helps you become fluent more quickly.
Studying abroad will give you the opportunity to meet other students from your host country, from other parts of the U.S., and from all over the world. We all hold stereotypes about people with different backgrounds, and the best way to break down those stereotypes is to meet new people who are different from you and find out what they're actually like. You can also help others break down stereotypes they may hold about Americans or people from Massachusetts. 
You will be able to view your home through the perspective of others. By meeting others from your host country and around the world, you will gain a more informed perspective on global affairs. You will be able to better understand the complexity of the world and the range of opinions, and bring that perspective home with you.
Getting to take classes in a new academic setting can give you a different perspective on your major, or the field in which you want to work. Imagine being able to study international business in China, art history in Florence, or literature in England!
Increased self confidence, independence, self sufficiency, patience, adaptability, cross-cultural communication skills, and a willingness to take on new challenges are just some of the benefits you will gain from study abroad that will last a lifetime.
